Printing error—or official card? The Zeta Set story

The photocopy look is the point
Wizards of the Coast and MSCHF designed Secret Lair x MSCHF: The Zeta Set to evoke early Magic playtest cards and photocopied artwork. Released on September 2, 2026, the product contains one Zeta Booster with seven randomized cards. The black-and-white copy look described here is an intentional official treatment, even if it looks like a printing fault in a photograph.
10% negative, 5% color banding
Wizards says most cards use the black-and-white treatment, 10% have an inverted photocopy-negative treatment, and 5% use a misregistered CMYK-style color-banding treatment. These are publisher-stated treatment rates, not a guarantee about a particular card or its price. The product’s card pool contains 121 different cards.
Appearance and format legality are different
Twelve Zeta Set cards were printed at common for the first time, prompting a Pauper legality debate. Wizards and the Pauper Format Panel said they would be legal in tabletop Pauper from September 7, 2026, but preemptively banned Narcomoeba and Price of Progress. A card’s appearance or rarity mark alone does not establish legality in every format.
Do not assume an intentional treatment is a misprint
An actual printing error and a designed treatment are different. Before trading, confirm that the card is from The Zeta Set, identify the card and treatment, and check the actual item photos and condition. Compare prices only for the same card and treatment.
